On a silent retreat in 2016, I spent some time with David Richo's book When Mary Becomes Cosmic, and with Beatrice Bruteau's concept of the "umbilicus point." In the introduction to his book, Richo calls on us to make our devotion to Mary more adult, by "visioning her not only as the Mary of faith, but also as an archetypal energy that endures in the universe, acknowledging her dark side with all its fertile potential, freeing ourselves from any disabling literalism in our appreciation of her, becoming aware of her cosmic dimensions." A year later I was asked to reflect on Mary and the Crucifixion and this is what came to mind.
